How to Compose a Poem For Beginners 1

One honest truth is that poetry is an art form that is enjoying rapid decline. So, in this age and time, it is not strange that some people may not understand what a poetry is. The limitless significance, of  content of a poem. It is not much of a big deal, if you do not have a foreknowledge of what poetry connotes. People think of 'Twinkle, twinkle little star', which is very popular in nursery rhyme books. A ferocious hunger grip others, at the mention of the word 'poem'. Few others are excited at the prospect of writing a poem, because they recognize the rich value of poetry. But how about those who feel burdened by the weight of despair at the prospect of writing a poem? This article is for you
.
We will begin with some simple description of what poetry is, in order to help you to realize the full power of poetry, and not to complexify your already preconceived notion of what poetry is.
 A poem is

  • a means by which a state of mind, an idea or a happening can be communicated through deliberate arrangement of language.
  •  an expression which is emotional.
  •  makes use of several literary techniques, which engages the visual, aural and mental aspect of cognitive and emotional thought process.
By this, I have explicated the totality of poetry. A poem appeals personally to me, when it either:
  • oozes sensibility
  • explains a situation or scenario
  • comfort or instruct how to ease out of the complexity of life.

The reason I outlined both my personal and general meaning of poetry is because both, is what a poem is made up of. There is no particular ingredient for cooking up a poetry piece. The fact is that the both the general and personal definition of a poem, exist in order to chart a starting point in composing a poetry piece. So, let combine both the general and personal meaning of poetry, so as to compose a poem with them.

The blue sky was beautiful on a sunday. The very day that the whiff of optimism hovered across the air, and the season was acknowledged by the ribbons, and the vibrant decorations the townsmen and women littered across the street. It was December. Across the street, the energetic and playful cheer of children, as they chased themselves beside the baobab tree could be heard. Their joyfulness was infectious, so it was difficult for us, not to catch the fervent feverish excitement.

Here, the prose note (above), has been tweaked with some few adjustments and line breaks and a title:

The blue sky

The blue sky
was beautiful on a Sunday. The very day
that the whiff of optimism hovered across
the air, the season was acknowledged by
the ribbons and vibrant decorations .
It was December.
Across the street,
the energetic playful cheer of children,
as they chase themselves beside the baobab tree
could be heard.
Their joyfulness was infectious,
so it was difficult for us,
not to catch the fervent feverish excitement.

You see, what I have done is that I have  dragged you into my multiple definitions of poetry which i outlined. I combined the standard definition of poetry, with my own personal conception of poetry: sensibility, story or instruction. The implication of this is that the composing of poetry is neither a magic trick nor an art form that needs to be inspired by an ecclesiastical or divine muse, nor an handiwork of a genius. Poetry deals with language, in a closely analyzed form, and needs constant practice. Poetry is the creation of life, fictive or factual, infuse to the minds of people for the sake of understanding, and even emotional upliftment.

You may ask: ' which method do i use to compose my poem?'  As far as poetry is concerned, there is neither a singular method, there is no best method.  Your duty, is to look for the means by which your poem is enjoyable for you to write, and the one that open yourself to you. Personally, my favourite method is:

Fore-mostly, think of which topic to dwell on. As difficult as that might look, it is among the most important starting point. You don't have to feel too concerned because your subject matter will not wither the quality of your poem. A lot of persons may feel they lack what to write but a deep introspection will reveal significant events in their lives. If these persons reveal they lack nothing to write after deep reflection, then it's best they write about not having what to write about
